Aviation Assessment Program
Program Highlights
At Caron Atlanta Outpatient Treatment Center, we offer an Aviation Assessment Program facilitated by Dr. Navjyot Singh Bedi, a HIMS-qualified psychiatrist with certifications in psychiatry and addiction psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), and in addiction medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM).
Who Would be Appropriate for this Program
For those who have been referred by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for an assessment of a potentially aero-medical disqualifying condition, this assessment will determine the next steps to take, including whether additional treatment is needed, what type of treatment may be necessary and whether a follow-up evaluation will be required.
Assessment Program Details
Caron’s expert psychiatrist, Dr. Bedi, will:
- Review pertinent records, such as academic, medical, psychiatric, and others as necessary.
- Conduct a clinical interview that includes mental health and substance use, aviation experience, employment and academic performance, medications, and medical history.
- The interview also allows the psychiatrist to observe behaviors and mental status.
Analysis & Next Steps
The assessment, which is done in-person at Caron's Atlanta Outpatient location, usually takes several hours.
After the assessment, the staff addiction psychiatrist will provide a summary of his findings with recommendations for next steps that may include treatment, medication, therapy, and/or monitoring, and sends it to the FAA. An FAA medical examiner follows up with the recommendation for next steps.
