Betsy Kohlbrenner
MSW, BA, LSW
Philadelphia
In working with patients in the Intensive Outpatient Program, Betsy Kohlbrenner seeks to understand what each patient needs to grow and progress. She facilitates group therapy, provides individual therapy, evaluates and assesses patients, and manages patients' cases while they are in treatment. Through this, Betsy helps clients recognize their strengths, develop coping skills, and work towards their recovery goals.
Prior to coming to Caron in 2025, Betsy was a primary therapist helping teens with mental health diagnoses in a partial hospitalization program and providing support to their families. She also gained experience through an internship as a counseling assistant within that program. As an intern in a psychiatric rehabilitation program, she worked with adults in recovery for substance use disorders and living with severe mental illness. Through Betsy’s experience, she has developed a compassionate and empathetic approach rooted in making her clients feel supported and empowered.
Before going to graduate school, Betsy was a teacher for three years, teaching teens diagnosed with learning disabilities, autism, and emotional disorders, such as anxiety and depression. She uses the skills and knowledge gained in that position in group facilitation, dealing with group dynamics, and helping patients use what they learn in individual therapy to connect with other group members. This work helped strengthen her ability to meet each client where they are and take a person-centered approach to care.
Betsy is a licensed social worker with a Master of Social Work from Westchester University, Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Temple University, Philadelphia. Betsy has received training in trauma-informed care, experiential approaches, and internal family systems. Betsy’s approach is also informed by various therapeutic approaches, including dialectical behavior therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and narrative therapy.
