Sylvia Dowers
MS, LMHC
Florida
Sylvia Dowers is the primary therapist for the Caron Florida Mental Health Program, offering patients a safe, accepting environment for their journey of change and growth.
Her approach is tailored to meet the unique needs of each person she works with through understanding, warmth, and empathy. Sylvia uses her experience and education to provide insight and awareness to help her patients build resilience and confidence as they work on understanding who they are and accomplishing their treatment goals. She also works with other members of the treatment team and updates referents and parents on her patients’ treatment.
To see patients make critical shifts in thinking as they progress through treatment and understand how to navigate life in healthy ways is the most rewarding aspect of her work.
Prior to coming to Caron in 2023, Sylvia served as a therapist and clinical advisor in various organizations and held a private practice. Working in a variety of environments with patients with diverse histories and backgrounds has strengthened her ability to connect and empathize with her patients.
She trained for two years with the Integrated Trauma Training Program at the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy in New York City, learning trauma theories and practices, including methods for reducing and stabilizing hyper- and hypo-arousal in trauma survivors. Sylvia is also trained in modalities such as mindfulness, sensorimotor psychotherapy, EMDR level 1 & 2, and the internal family systems model, which she implements during treatment sessions.
Sylvia is a licensed mental health counselor. She has a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling from Long Island University - Brooklyn, New York, and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Long Island University - C.W. Post, Brookville, New York.
