What to Expect in Treatment

In a word: transformation. Treatment is a transformative process that takes you from the difficulties, dangers, and harm that addiction causes to a life in recovery that opens you to rejuvenation and renewal.

Counseling is the core element of treatment at Caron, which includes:

  • Several hours of group therapy throughout the day seven days a week
  • One or two weekly individual sessions, depending on your program
  • On-campus DHARMA, SMART, 12-Step recovery meetings

The weekly schedule also includes presentations, talks by Caron alumni, wellness activities, and down time.

Down time allows you to complete treatment work and learn coping skills to manage quiet time and boredom and better understand how to manage yourself in your life in recovery. It’s also a chance to relax and talk with other patients and on-duty staff. You can watch TV, listen to music, or take walks to meditate or enjoy the views.

The cornerstone of treatment is community—getting to know other patients and staff. During community time, you can enjoy sober activities, like watching movies or hiking, which is an opportunity to find out what sober you likes to do.

Spiritual care is an important component of Caron's treatment in Pennsylvania and Florida, with groups, lectures, and meditation integrated into our programs. You can also attend services as your clinical needs allow, whether Jewish Sabbath, Muslim prayers, or a Catholic service. The weekly chapel service in Pennsylvania celebrates the transformative power of healing and is open to all patients and their families.

Caron offers delicious and healthy meals three times a day with accommodations if you are vegan or vegetarian or have allergies or other medical needs. Proper nutrition is foundational for brain health and healing. Sitting down with others in treatment also builds community and lets you know you are not alone on your recovery journey.

Family Treatment

Your family members will be invited to participate with you in a family session and can also attend Caron’s Family Education Program virtually or in person. Some programs include more intensive family treatment. Clinical staff will periodically update your family members on your progress. (You can designate who will receive those calls.) Caron offers additional family services for your family while you are in treatment and after.
